Medicare will soon permit reimbursement for home anticoagulation monitoring machines and supplies
Like finger-stick glucose levels for diabetics, testing is simple: patients prick a finger and put a drop or two of blood on a test strip which is inserted into a portable meter that displays the INR number. Interpreting the results is much more complex, however, and patients will still need to be in close phone contact with their health care provider in determining any adjustments to dosage of warfarin. Medicare, under the proposal that's likely to be finalized next month, would cover the device and the supplies. MedPage Today, Feb 2008
Chamomile doesn't mix with warfarin (Coumadin)
Canadian physicians warn of this potentially dangerous interaction in a recently published case study of a 70-year-old woman who developed severe internal bleeding, while on warfarin, after drinking chamomile tea to soothe a sore throat and applying chamomile lotion to relieve chest congestion and reduce foot swelling.
